Having your own vegetable garden on the balcony or in the garden is important: it will allow you to have fresh food, healthy, and grown without the use of pesticides. Why not try to enrich your garden with tomatoes? Growing tomatoes in the garden or on the balcony of the house is quite simple and, in general, the plant produces fruit about 40 or 50 days after sowing. Although native to tropical and subtropical areas of Latin America, the tomato is one of the vegetables symbol of traditional Italian food and Mediterranean diet and can be of different types.

THE PROPERTY 'NUTRITIONAL OF TOMATOES - Tomatoes are rich in water and have many nutritional properties important to the health and well being of the organism. They contain vitamins, fiber and minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium, phosphorus and calcium.

If you do not have a vegetable garden or a garden, you can grow tomatoes in pots: you just need to grow the plants in the sunniest corner of the balcony or terrace. The harvest takes place in the summer but in some cases can last until autumn.



THE PROCEDURE FOR THE GROWING TOMATOES IN THE GARDEN  - Let's see then, step by step, how to grow tomatoes in the garden or in pots on the balcony of the house:

     THE SEEDS OF TOMATOES - Planting tomatoes is carried out during the months of January and February in warm seedbed, and then proceed to transplantation in the months of March and April. The ideal choice would be to use as seedbeds several jars in which to place 3-4 seeds. The sowing in seedbed allows you to easily select the strongest seedling.

     TRANSPLANTATION OF TOMATOES - If you want to proceed with the cultivation from seedlings, wait for the month of April. After being purchased in nurseries or in consortia, arrange them in the ground or in pots in rows spaced at least 12 inches. Try to bury at least five inches deep and do not forget to add organic fertilizer or compost. As regards the choice of the seedlings orientatevi more towards the variety "Pachino" or "San Marzano", perfect for the preparation of sauces and salads.

     GROWING TOMATOES - As the tomato plants are climbers, after they have been buried, each of them tied to a stick in such a way so that they can grow upright and keep raised the branches with the fruit. During the period of growth removed leaves that grow from stem and leaf to allow the plant to grow better and watered at least once or twice a week, preferably after sunset during the coolest hours of the day.

     TIPS FOR GROWING IN POTS - If you make growing in pots, choose one with a diameter between 20 and 30 cm, and avoid stagnation of water in the saucers.
